I met Jack 15 years ago, initially he was so shy and so timid, I thought “why should I even bother to get to know him”, but when I looked into those big brown eyes, I just melted, and I knew he was the one for me.
After the initial introduction, Jack, let me know who was the boss, and showed me in no uncertain terms, where he stood. He was the alfa-male and he knew it. He was very steadfast but very adorable, so I let him be who he wanted to be, I knew it only would take a matter of time and love between the both of us to change anything negative.
As time went on we were both strong-willed and strong-minded, butted heads more than I can count, however, our struggles always ended amicabily with both parties satisfied with the outcome. There were times, of course, when we each ended up licking our wounds after a fierce battle, but we always remained friends.
One time, I vididly remember, was when I had to re-dress his wound after an operation, he didn’t like how I bandaged his leg, I evidently took too long and he took a bite out of my arm, OUCH !.
Jack is my 15 year old mixed rottweiller/sheppard puppy, he’ll always be my little puppy even though he’s now (in dog years) 98 years old.
I can’t tell you the happiness and joy my husband and I have had knowing this little guy. Training him was a breeze, he picked up on all the lessons quite readily, and outside of an occasional mishap every now and then, going to the vet was a non-issue.
So if there’s anyone out there who is having second thoughts about adopting a dog today, I’d say to them, if you don’t adopt you’ll be missing out on some of the most special years of your lives.
